Outdoor benches are one of the simplest and most basic types of outdoor furniture – you can make one of your own with little more than two cinder blocks and a wooden board – they can also be one of the most beautiful. Outdoor benches range in appearance from minimal decoration to extravagant decoration. Some benches are simple and backless, some have curved backs, some have ornate designs both on the seat and back. Some have thick pedestals, some have dainty thin legs. There are many options to choose from and this provides the gardener/home owner the opportunity to choose a bench that will best suit his or her outdoor space.
Outdoor benches can be placed where other pieces of garden furniture rarely go – they are manufactured in a variety of sizes and shapes which produces versatility in where they can be placed. Smaller benches can reside in the middle of a garden bed if the owner wishes it. Larger benches can provide a seating area where one can gaze at the flowers and plants outside. An outdoor bench should coordinate with the type of garden it will be placed in. If you have planted an English garden, then an English style outdoor bench would likely best suit. If you have a more modern or contemporary outdoor space than a more linear and simple outdoor bench would probably look best.
Outdoor benches are the equivalent of an invitation to sit, relax and enjoy the outdoors. If you place a garden bench along side the sidewalk in front of your house, passers-by will likely take notice of the space and its beauty, because a bench makes an inviting statement. When set beneath trees, outdoor benches welcome guests to sit and enjoy the shade while sipping a refreshing drink provided by a most generous host. When against a wall on the front porch, outdoor benches welcome people into a home. And when in the middle of a garden, garden benches invite people to take the time to sit and watch the garden grow. After all, there is no better place to watch a garden grow than from within it. It should be noted that benches are inviting and good for enjoying the space they are in, however, they are not meant for long term sitting. If you wish to have a space that is meant for you and your guests to sit for hours, consider a deep seating set with cushions.
But as you may already know, outdoor benches are much more than just places to sit. They are pieces that can transcend the label of garden décor; they can be art. Consider even making your own outdoor bench. This approach can be more fun than shopping, and will give the maker a sense of pride and accomplishment in having made his or her own utilitarian art work. Look for ideas in catalogs and on the internet. People have become very inventive in creating places to sit. Some have made amazing seating arrangements using recycled materials. This approach means that you are taking care of the outdoors while enjoying the outdoors. Even your outdoor bench may not be considered a work of art one thing is true for most benches: whether being admired from afar or from within sitting-distance, you can be sure that your garden benches will be admired and that they will invite others to enjoy your outdoor space.
If you think that your garden or your yard is missing something, consider whether or not an outdoor bench can fill that void – it is not always plants and flowers that a garden needs! Interestingly enough, it is often the furniture and décor that can make a garden appear complete. An outdoor bench might just be the perfect finishing touch for your garden.
No matter what the tastes of the home owner are, if one looks carefully enough, you are sure to find some outdoor benches that match them. There are concrete outdoor benches, wooden ones, marble ones, metal ones, and more. There are outdoor benches with backs and ones with cushions, ones that double as storage devices, and ones that are curved and some that are straight. There truly is a great variety of garden benches that can be placed in your yard or on your patio. Even if you choose to have very little outdoor furniture, a garden bench is still a piece that you should consider setting up in your yard. When thinking about beautifying your yard, remember too: that outdoor benches can be so much more than seats; they can be art!
